Two WMA students will be fighting tomorrow night in Newtown Pa for “American Mixed Martial Arts Fight League”. Many coaches call their fighters “warriors” or say they are going to “war”. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In wars people die, sometimes violently. A warrior is someone that is trained to kill his adversary by what ever means necessary. MMA is a sport with rules where nobody dies. It’s a sporting event between two highly trained martial arts athletes.
As a coach I of course want my fighters to win, every coach does. However 50% of the fighters that compete tomorrow will lose. Winning is very important but in my opinion it’s second to what fighters learn from the experience of combative sports. Is a fighter more concerned about “glory” and gold medals or personal growth and improving as young men and athlete?
Mike Boettecher AKA “The Diesel Weasel” and Pat Elgert AKA “The Iron Chef” have trained to the best of their abilities and will benefit from their sacrifice and dedication. Best wishes to both of you young men tomorrow.
